A tale of two dudes

I’ve been active on threads again and a couple accounts stood out to me.

They resonated, because both were so obviously desperate for success, like many of us are.

Some of us have the luxury to relax, kick back a little and write blog posts about those still struggling.

Dude#1

Dude#1 attracted my attention because he is rebuilding a pretty complicated website. He’s an aspiring web developer, someone at the very beginning of his journey.

He’s using a trendy tech stack, not because it’s the best tool for the job.

But because getting a job relies on him being proficient with what the recruiters are asking for.

He is investing hours and hours in rebuilding complicated behaviours and interactivity, sharpening his skills, becoming better at a craft he will one day be able to call his.

He also shares his progress on threads, some people like and follow, because they see the difficulty of the task he set for himself.

If he continues to set challenges for himself, he will grow as a dev, he will attract more and more followers and soon enough someone will reach out and hire him for some sort of a job.

His account is only a couple days old and yet already has 50 followers.

His path is challenging, but filled with a lot of wins, pride for the hard work put in, lessons learned, skills gained.

Maybe one day he’ll put out tutorials, or teach someone else.

Dude#2

Dude#2 attracted my attention with obvious spam-posts. Like he stood out. Many, many per day.

ChatGPT generated text, pasted into some meme maker to make an image.

His account is only a week old and he already “follows” 1000+ accounts.

He’s a real human being, doing the job of a bot.

His path is also challenging, it takes a lot of work.

Searching for new accounts, following, engaging, liking.

You try following 1000 accounts in a week. It ain’t easy.

However from my uneducated perspective, this path is full of bitterness and rejection.

Imagine, putting in all this hard work and being disliked and hated for it.

Doomed to stay in an eco chamber of F4F 0 engagement accounts.

Doomed to stay a bot among the living.

There is a lesson here

The takeaway I’m choosing today is this: just because something is difficult doesn’t automatically make it worth pursuing.

Choose your path wisely.
