Do or do not, there is no try

For years, I’ve dreamed of becoming one thing or another, hoping and striving towards something. Some things happened, some did not.

One common thread for those things that did “happen” is definitely persistence and putting in regular work towards the betterment of these goals.

With many things I used to wait/search for inspiration to do something, but inspiration is never promised. Hard/boring/routine things will stay hard/boring/routine, they will grind away at any inspiration and sooner or later, will kill any sort of drive.

Excuses will creep in, they will sound like perfectly valid reasons to skip today, maybe tomorrow or Monday are better suited and poof, just like that, we’re back to our old routines.

One thing that keeps me going back to the gym is this one phrase I picked up in a bodybuilding book or video, can’t remember now. It goes like this:

When it comes to going to the gym when sick it’s simple — do you have high temperature?

No — you go. Yes — stay home.

I used this logic for a while and over time it has become so ingrained in my mind, that I use it as a final argument for any sort of internal attempts at weaseling out of going to the gym.

Discipline over motivation. Do or do not, there is no try.
